Second official group meeting

Group discussions

We haven’t formally picked a group leader, but as I feel that I’m well organised and came up with the game idea, I have a strong vision of which direction I want the game heading. I mostly come up with spit balling ideas and see where it takes us. We discussed shortening the food court area (ever so slightly) and I will be shortening the car park area too.

Talks with Sean & Ryan

I spoke to Sean about my biggest fear about creating this game, which is I don’t want the game to feel like two separate games. What I mean by that is, when the player loads up the game (they will be playing the levels Sean created, which is the mall area, including the doggy care centre, the food court & a small arcade section). After progressing through that they enter my part of the levels where they take place in a garden centre and then end the game in a car park.

To avoid this happening, we have spoken about our ideas, and I feel I need to make my side a bit more humorous, which is fine as I already have the bread and butter down, I can start to change areas more comedic for the player.

Regarding Ryan (as I gave him a list of mechanics to make) he has already created a chunk of them that fit the game’s feel and genre perfectly.

Talks with Will & Dan

I spoke to Will & Dan about focusing on making just one level polished and complete (art wise) and we can leave the others grey boxed. They will be making usable props for all levels (to give a feel for the player at least). We decided to art up the mall area of the level (which is the start), but for the car park, it will just be grey blocks (for buildings) as that is a larger space and the environment of a car park isn’t the most exciting place.

We did want to art up the garden centre (as that would be a fun one to do as well) but due to time, it’s best just to focus on one level. Again, they will make probs for these levels, such as plants (as I’m sure Will said he’s already got plant props made), so they will be added into to the game.

Tasks for myself this week

For this week, I’m going to overlook my LDD to make the wording more humorous and relevant to the genre of our comedic game (as my LDD is written in a more formal format). I will re-word the key events, to make areas more memorable and link them up in the document to see where these events occur (making it user friendly for the reader).

After I am happy with the amendments & adjustments, I will start to block out the garden centre in UE5 and once complete, I will notify the others (mainly Ryan, so he can start making further blueprints for my level). After that I will block out the car park and do the exact same.

Summary

Next Tuesday will be our last official (in-person group meeting) unless it starts to get a bit trickier, we may need to meet up in person to adjust / sort out some things which we are all capable of doing. Other than that, we have a Team discord & Trello where we have a list of ideas, tasks for people that they are doing and great communication between the group notifying others what needs doing or if they need help with anything, they can always ask.

I’m confident with where the project is now, and my focus right now is making the garden centre in UE5 as soon as to give to Ryan (as I have already blocked out my levels in SketchUp).
